Veterans and their families from across Alabama gathered March 29 at the Alabama National Cemetery to honor those who served in the Vietnam War in recognition of National Vietnam Veterans Day.

The ceremony took place at the highest point of the cemetery, where a memorial overlook allows visitors to reflect while viewing the grounds.

The event began with a motorcycle procession, followed by a flyover featuring veteran-operated planes and a fighter jet. The aircraft were restored to their original Vietnam War-era paint schemes. One of the planes was flown by a 98-year-old veteran.

The service was emceed by Edon Woodie, a member of the Alabama National Cemetery Support Committee who assists with organizing ceremonies at the site.

The ceremony was also led by student oratorical district winner Lucas Kalba, who introduced each guest and guided the program through its sequence of events.

Following the opening remarks, the presentation of colors was conducted by the Sons of the American Revolution Honor Guard. The national anthem was performed by Anthony Smith.

A ceremonial wreath-laying honored all Vietnam veterans, with special recognition given to the family of Vernon F. Pendergrass, a Gold Star recipient. The tribute served as a moment to recognize the sacrifice of Gold Star families and remember those who did not return home.

As the ceremony drew to a close, Vietnam veteran Larry Wojciechowski shared reflections on the loss and sacrifice endured during the war, as well as the history of the 1st Cavalry Division.

The ceremony concluded with the unveiling of a monument dedicated to the 1st Cavalry Division, located across from the overlook site. The monument now stands among several others honoring different service groups and their sacrifices for the United States.

The event served as both a tribute and a reminder of the lasting impact of the Vietnam War, offering attendees a moment of reflection and gratitude for those who served and those who gave their lives.
