UM admissions aids BSC transfers

By M.K. Bryant, News editor

On March 26, officials at Birmingham-Southern College announced that the college will permanently close on May 31 due to ongoing financial issues.

The closure follows a failed 18 month effort to obtain a state-sanctioned loan.

This decision will result in the displacement of BSC students and employees. The University of Montevallo is making efforts to make the process of transferring schools as smooth as possible for incoming BSC transfer students.

UM Executive Director of Admissions Audrey Crawford explained some of the efforts being made to help BSC students through the transfer process.

“Montevallo will be offering an expedited transfer process and scholarship opportunities for all BSC transfer students. In addition to scholarships and an expedited transcript review, Montevallo will also waive the $30 application fee for all BSC students,” said Crawford.

There are various scholarships that are available to BSC transfers. Freshman merit scholarships are available for BSC students with less than 30 credit hours and transfer scholarships are available to students with 30 or more credit hours. Foundation scholarships are available for all BSC students.

As of April 8, UM has had 30 BSC students apply for admission.

There is a designated page on UM’s website for BSC students, which can be found at www.montevallo.edu/bsc. This page includes information on the BSC Teach Out and Accommodated Transfer Programs, transfer admission requirements and more.
