LeBron James announces his commitment to the University of Montevallo

In a move that stunned the basketball world, longtime NBA superstar LeBron James announced last week that he will be heading to college basketball this fall, committing to the University of Montevallo to finally use his four years of NCAA eligibility.

The 40-year-old NBA veteran made the announcement shortly after finishing the season with the Los Angeles Lakers, confirming that he will enroll this fall and suit up for the Falcons.

“This is a really exciting time for our athletic department,” the university said in an official statement following the announcement. “We couldn’t be happier that an icon of the sport wants to call our campus home.”

James enters the college ranks with a résumé that includes three Olympic gold medals, 22 NBA All-Star appearances, four NBA championships, four league MVP awards and four Finals MVPs, along with nearly two decades of experience playing against the best athletes in the world.

Now, he’ll face an entirely new challenge: the Gulf South Conference.

“I love what Coach Komara is building down there,” James said during a press conference after his final game in Los Angeles. “It just seems like a great culture with great guys, and honestly I’ve always dreamed of playing a Tuesday night road game in Mississippi.”

Montevallo’s men’s basketball team is coming off one of the most successful stretches in program history, recording back-to-back 20-win seasons and consecutive NCAA tournament appearances. With two starting seniors graduating, including Gulf South Conference Player of the Year Derek Moore, James is expected to compete for significant minutes immediately.

But the transition to Division II basketball won’t necessarily be easy.

“Adjusting to the play style of the Gulf South Conference will definitely be a challenge,” James said. “It’s one of the toughest leagues in D2, just battling every night.”

The toughness of the conference is further reinforced by the fact that the GSC is sending four teams to this year’s NCAA tournament: Montevallo, Alabama Huntsville, West Alabama, and West Florida, now the reigning GSC champions.

James will finish the summer with the Lakers before arriving on campus in August, where the university plans to hold an introductory press conference to help him adjust to the local media, and explain why everyone keeps referring to campus simply as “the bricks.”
