As the 2025-26 athletic year winds down, a major decision loomed for Freddie the Falcon, the University of Montevallo’s beloved costumed mascot.
Should he return to Montevallo for his final year of NCAA eligibility, or enter the transfer portal and test the waters elsewhere?
Ultimately, Freddie decided it was time to take a leap of faith, and possibly a much larger NIL deal.
“It was a really hard decision,” Freddie said during a press conference attended by multiple local media outlets and one confused biology professor who thought it was about actual falcons. “There were a lot of late nights, a lot of conversations with coaches, family, and my agent.”
After nearly three decades patrolling the sidelines, hyping up crowds, and occasionally terrifying small children at community events, Freddie announced he will officially enter the transfer portal in search of new opportunities.
Sources close to the mascot say the move was largely motivated by the potential for improved NIL deals, including rumored offers involving unlimited photo ops and a regional car dealership commercial.
Freddie is currently in discussions with several athletic departments across the country about where his talents, primarily dancing, posing and aggressively flapping his wings, might land next.
“I’m just trying to find the right fit,” Freddie said. “Somewhere that values my leadership, my energy, and my ability to really hype up a crowd.”
Students across campus reacted with shock to the news, with many saying they never expected to see Freddie leave while they were still enrolled.
“I always thought Freddie would retire here,” said one sophomore. “I mean, he’s been here longer than most of the buildings.”
The Falcons will remain the university’s official mascot despite Freddie’s departure, but the athletic department confirmed that a nationwide search has begun for a new costumed performer willing to withstand Alabama heat and appearances at home athletic events.
For now, Freddie says he’s focused on the next chapter while remaining grateful for his time on the bricks.
“I’ll always love Montevallo,” Freddie said. “But sometimes you’ve got to spread your wings and see what else is out there.”
Freddie also confirmed he will continue documenting his transfer journey on social media.
“Recruitment updates, official visits, maybe a commitment video,” he said. “Stay tuned.”
