Madalynn Hughes is a freshman Elementary Education major here at the University of Montevallo. She was born in Kokomo, Indiana and moved to Lakeview, Alabama three years ago.
One of Hughes’ reasons for choosing Montevallo was because it reminded her of her hometown. “My elementary school was like, historic and all brick buildings. It’s so cozy and nice.” Additionally, several of her friends attend Montevallo, which was another contributing factor in her decision.
Hughes is majoring in elementary education because she wants to be an occupational therapist for children with autism and special needs. She would love to work here in Alabama but is open to moving to find work in this field.
Hughes is the youth director for the Church of God of the Union Assembly in Clay, Alabama. “I think that’s where I want to be, so I don’t really want to stray too far. I would like to stay near my kids and help them there, and if God calls me to go somewhere else, I’ll go somewhere else.”
While she is not involved in any campus organizations yet, she is a huge fan of Gold Side! While she wasn’t able to go to the past mixer, her roommate was kind enough to shuttle some GV pins from the mixer to her. Her focus right now is getting through freshman year, but when asked about what she wants to accomplish on campus, she said, “I just want to be seen as a light. […] Where I go, I try to spread God’s love, not even just by talking about Him, but just like showing people what that is. […] I hope that who I am brings people closer to Him.”
If she could travel to any place right now, she would want to go to Paris because she’s watching “The Summer I Turned Pretty”. While in Paris, she would not like to try escargot but would like to see what all the buzz about croissants and apple strudel is about.
