With a new year comes news movies to watch and tv shows obsess over weekly. There’s a wide variety of films and television that is coming out this year. This article will give you an idea of what to keep on your radar and even remind you of the juggernaut releases that are to come.
“The Bride!”
The second Frankenstein adaptation in five months comes from Maggie Gyllenhaal. In her rendition, a lonely Frankenstein’s monster (Christian Bale) travels to 1930s Chicago to ask groundbreaking scientist Dr. Euphronious (Annette Bening) to create a companion for him. The two revive a murdered young woman and The Bride (Jessie Buckley) is born. What ensues is beyond what either of them could have imagined: Murder! Possession! A wild and radical cultural movement! And outlaw lovers in a wild and combustible romance! “The Bride!” releases in theaters and IMAX on March 6.
“Project Hail Mary”
“Project Hail Mary,” directed by Phil Lord and Christopher Miller, is an adaptation of the sci-fi novel of the same name by Andy Weir, who also wrote “The Martian,”which director Ridley Scott adapted in 2015. Ryan Gosling stars as Ryland Grace, a middle school teacher who is chosen to be sent out into space in search of an answer as to why the sun is dying. He’s the only hope to save our planet. “Project Hail Mary” releases in theaters and IMAX on March 20th.
“Disclosure Day”
Director, Steven Spielberg, is back with another exploration of the extra-terrestrial with a sci-fi thriller about the discovery of aliens living amongst mankind. The film stars Emily Blunt, Josh O’ Connor, Colin Firth and Colman Domingo. Though “Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Sull” featured aliens, this will be the first time in 21 years, since “War of the Worlds,” that Spielberg makes a film about aliens. “Disclosure Day” releases in theaters and IMAX on June 12.
“Supergirl”
Milly Alcock was first introduced as Supergirl at the end of James Gunn’s “Superman” last year and now she’s getting the spotlight on the big screen in an adaptation of the 2022 comic “, Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow.” The film, directed by Craig Gillespie, centers around Kara Zor-El, who, unlike her cousin, grew up on Krypton and watched everyone around her die over the course of years. In the story, she celebrates her 23rd birthday by getting drunk under a red sun when a young girl named Ruthye (Eve Ridley) enlists her help in achieving vengeance on Krem of the Yellow Hills (Matthias Schoenarts), the criminal who murdered her father. Along the way they cross paths with Lobo (Jason Momoa), a crass bounty hunter who rides a motorcycle through space. “Supergirl” releases in theaters and IMAX on June 26th.
“The Odyssey”
Christopher Nolan, known for directing huge, epic films, is now adapting the original epic with Homer’s “The Odyssey.” Odysseus (Matt Damon), the legendary Greek king of Ithaca, embarks on a long and perilous journey home following the Trojan War, chronicling his encounters with mythical beings such as the Cyclops Polyphemus, the Sirens and the witch-goddess Circe (Charlize Theron), while attempting to reunite with his wife, Penelope (Anne Hathaway), and son, Telemachus (Tom Holland). “The Odyssey” releases in theaters and IMAX on July 17.
“Spider-Man: Brand New Day”
Destin Daniel Cretton (“Shang-Chi”) directs the fourth Spider-Man film from Marvel Studios. Tom Holland stars as Peter Parker alongside Jon Bernthal as the Punisher, Mark Ruffalo as the Hulk, Marvin Jones III as Tombstone, Michael Mando as Scorpion and Sadie Sink in an unknown role. Plot details are under wraps, but it seems that, after Holland’s previous trilogy had Peter travelling to Washington D.C. and Europe and fighting multiversal battles, this film will have more of a street-level focus.“Spider-Man: Brand New Day” releases in theaters on July 31st.
“Lanterns”
The second attempt at adapting the Green Lantern in live action and the fifth project to be released in James Gunn’s DCU, Lanterns is a series from Chris Mundy, Damon Lindelof and Tom King that follows recruit John Stewart (Aaron Pierre) and Lantern legend Hal Jordan (Kyle Chandler), two intergalactic cops drawn into a dark, Earth-based mystery as they investigate a murder in the American heartland. “Lanterns” is expected to premiere on HBO Max in late summer of 2026.
“Clayface”
Written by Mike Flanagan and directed by James Watkins, “Clayface” is a stripped-down body horror film about a B-movie actor (Tom Rhys Harries) who injects himself with a substance to keep himself relevant, only to find out that he can reshape his face and form, becoming a walking piece of clay. The film is a part of James Gunn’s DCU, separate from the world of Matt Reeves’ “The Batman.” “Clayface” comes to theaters on September 11th.
“The Legend of Aang: The Last Airbender”
“The Legend of Aang” is an animated film taking place about a decade after the events of the beloved animated fantasy series “Avatar: The Last Airbender” and follows the series’ main characters as adults. While originally announced to be coming to theaters, Paramount has since decided the film will only be available on Paramount+ because they hate money. “The Legend of Aang: The Last Airbender” releases on October 9th.
“Godzilla Minus Zero”
Writer and director Takashi Yamazaki returns for the follow-up to 2023’s “Godzilla Minus One,” which made over $116 million at the box office and won Best Visual Effects at the 96th Academy Awards, becoming the first Asian film to take home the award. The plot has yet to be announced. “Godzilla Minus Zero” hits theaters on November 6th.
“Narnia: The Magician’s Nephew”
Greta Gerwig, director of “Barbie,” the highest grossing film of 2023, is now directing a new Narnia film, a franchise that hasn’t been touched for sixteen years. Produced by Netflix, the film will adapt the sixth book in C.S. Lewis’ series, “The Magician’s Nephew,” which serves as a prequel to “The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe” and centers on the creation of Narnia by Aslan (Meryl Streep). The film also stars Daniel Craig, Carey Mulligan and Emma Mackey. “Narnia: The Magician’s Nephew” will release exclusively in IMAX theaters on November 26th before coming to Netflix on Christmas day.
“Madden”
Sports biopics continue to spring up across Hollywood, and “Madden” is the latest addition, boasting a star-studded cast. Nicolas Cage is set to portray legendary NFL coach and broadcaster John Madden in a film chronicling his life and rise to success. The film will also explore Madden’s role in the creation of the iconic Madden NFL video game franchise. The cast also includes Christian Bale, Kathryn Hahn, John Mulaney, and Shane Gillis, with the film set to premiere on Prime Video on November 26.
“Dune: Part Three”
Denis Villeneuve is back with his final Dune film. While the first two films adapted Frank Herbert’s first Dune book, “Dune: Part Three” adapts the second book, “Dune: Messiah.” “Dune: Part Three“takes place twelve years after the previous film and will explore the consequences of Paul Atreides’ actions. The children of Paul and Chani will be introduced, and Robert Pattinson joins the cast as a villain named Scytale. “Dune: Part Three” comes to theaters and IMAX on December 18th.
“Avengers: Doomsday”
The MCU has waned in quality since the Infinity Saga ended with “Avengers: Endgame” in 2019, but “Avengers: Doomsday” is Marvel studios’ way of trying to recapture the public’s attention by bringing back fan-favorite characters (and actors playing completely different characters) for the first part of the epic finale of the Multiverse Saga. Robert Downey Jr. returns to the Marvel machine as Dr. Doom, who poses a great threat to the multiverse. The Thunderbolts (aka The New Avengers),the Fantastic Four, The Wakandans and the X-Men (from the 2000s Fox films) all must team up to defeat him. Also returning are Chris Evans as Steve Rogers, Chris Hemsworth as Thor, Simu-Liu as Shang-Chi, Paul Rudd as Ant-Man and Tom Hiddleston as Loki. The Russo brothers are set to return as directors. “Avengers: Doomsday” comes to theaters on December 18th.
“Werwulf”
Writer and director Robert Eggers (“Nosferatu,” “The Northman”) is back with his fifth dark historical fantasy film. Set in 13th century England, the story focuses on local villagers who are stalked by a mysterious creature. As the attacks continue, ancient folklore and superstition bleed into a terrifying reality. While official plot details are under wraps, the film will be a historical take on the werewolf mythos. The film stars Aaron Taylor-Johnson, Lily-Rose Depp, Willem Dafoe and Ralph Ineson. “Werwulf” releases in theaters on Christmas day.
“Spider-Noir”
“Spider-Noir” is a live-action series following Ben Reilly (Nicolas Cage), a private investigator in 1933 who also fights crime as Spider-Man. It’s a spin-off of “Spider-Man: Into The Spider-Verse,” which first introduced the character to audiences. The series will be released in black & white and in color on Amazon Prime in 2026.
“The Death of Robin Hood”
Grappling with his past after a life of crime and murder, Robin Hood (Hugh Jackman) finds himself gravely injured after a battle he thought would be his last. In the hands of a mysterious woman (Jodie Comer), he is offered a chance at salvation. The film is produced by A24, and it’s written and directed by Michael Sarnoski, director of “Pig” and “A Quiet Place: Day One.” “The Death of Robin Hood” releases in theaters in 2026.
“Send Help”
Master of Horror, Sam Raimi, is back with his first horror film in over 15 years. We follow Linda Liddle, an underappreciated worker that is passed on a promotion because of her boss who’s a jerk. The two are stranded on a remote island after a plane crash. Their dynamic quickly changes as Liddle taks charge to ensure their survival. The film stars Rachel McAdams and Dylan O’Brien. Raimi will produce and direct a script written by Damian Shannon and Mark Swift. “Send Help” releases in theaters and 3D on Jan 30.
