The Falcon Scholars in Action program at the University of Montevallo is in effect for the 2025 school year. Students participating in the program have been placed in different nonprofits in the Shelby County area. A few of the nonprofits include Boys and Girls Clubs of Central Alabama, the Shelby County Arts Council, and the Wallace Center for Arts and Reconciliation.
This year, leaders of the program aimed to foster a competitive interview process from which 10 students were selected to move forward.
The program is designed to provide students with work experience relevant to their field of study, assist them in building a portfolio, and strengthen their relationships within the community.
The program benefits the nonprofits by providing a student volunteer who will work alongside them to assist in areas of their choosing. Students will also be able to apply for a small grant which they will use to help further the nonprofit’s abilities. One student from last year used the grant to buy sensory toys for a classroom.
Throughout the year, Falcon Scholars will be gathering information about their experiences which they will present in the spring. The goal is to create mindfulness while volunteering and inspire the next group of students who come through the program.
The Falcon Scholars will work with their nonprofits for the fall 2025 semester and spring 2026 semester. This week marks the first full week that students will be able to participate at their nonprofit’s worksites.
