Winter break kicks off the beginning of UM’s basketball season

As winter break for many students in Montevallo begins, so do the men’s and women’s basketball seasons. Both teams face the challenges that COVID-19 has continued to pose.

Among these, COVID-19 protocols have caused the men’s team to postpone their matches against Valdosta State and Shorter University. Neither games have set dates as of Dec. 19.

This news follows the men’s first win of the season against West Georgia. The final score was 75-72. Xavier Malcom scored the final three points with six seconds left in the game. Malcom finished the game, leading the team with 22 points. The next game for the Falcons will be at Lee University, Jan. 2.

The women’s basketball team has not had any challenges with COVID-19. The Falcons fell short their first two matches against West Georgia and Valdosta State. Both games had five point or fewer margins. Despite the losses, the Falcons played until the last minute.

The next game for the women’s team is at Montevallo against Lee University.

The women’s team will be going into the game with some momentum following their dominating win against Shorter University. Nearly doubling Shorter’s points with a final score of 91-46, the Falcons will be looking forward to Jan. 2.
