Sony Showcase 2021 Highlights

By Jayden Presley

“Play has no limits.”

The PlayStation slogan appeared to kick-off 42 minutes of the Sony Showcase.

The first game trailer promoted the remake of a familiar game developed by BioWare, Electronic Arts and Aspyr in 2003.

“Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic Remake” is set to be released on PlayStation 5. By playing the nostalgic “Star Wars” theme, the trailer reminisced on the success of the classic RPG series.

The original game will be available to play for the Nintendo Switch on Nov. 11, but the remake for the PS5 does not yet have a release date.

Several other games will be remastered for the PS5, which include “Alan Wake,” “Grand Theft Auto V,” “Uncharted 4: A Thief’s End” and “Uncharted: The Lost Legacy.”

Notable games to anticipate are Marvel’s “Spider-Man 2” and “Wolverine,” developed by Insomniac Games. Eidos-Montréal, who developed the “Deus Ex” series and Marvel’s “Avengers” with Square Enix, is currently developing a “Guardians of the Galaxy” game.

“Guardians of the Galaxy” will be released Oct. 26, 2021.

“Spider-Man 2” will continue the stories of Peter Parker and Miles Morales and is projected to be released in 2023. The trailer depicts both characters finding the antagonist Venom in a dark alley.

The characters of Parker and Morales had their own games with “Spider-Man” and “Spider-Man: Miles Morales,” respectively, and “Spider-Man” became one of the best-selling PS4 games in 2019.

The showcase also announced “Project EVE,” a game set in a post-apocalyptic earth in the distant future. A hack-and-slash game, “Project EVE” first appeared in 2019. The official trailer is revealed during the showcase, and developers are still being hired for the game.

“Tiny Tina’s Wonderlands,” a spin-off from the “Borderlands” series, is a role-playing game set to be released on March 25, 2022. With a snarky narrator, fluid graphics and cel shaded art style, gameplay involves a variety of weapons for a first-person shooter experience.

“God of War: Ragnarok” serves as the finale for the Sony Showcase. The trailer showed the return of Kratos and an older Atreus, along with Mimir and the familiar world of the Norse gods.

Its predecessor, “God of War” (2018) won Game of the Year, a hotly debated topic because “Red Dead Redemption 2” came out the same year.

Based on the game trailer, “God of War: Ragnarok” continues the journey with Atreus finding his destiny and the Norse god Tyr. New enemies, enemy designs and updated controls will be added to the game, which is set to be released in 2022.

It’s yet to be seen if “God of War: Ragnarok” will take the Game of the Year position once more.
