Shooting on overland rd. leaves young woman hospitalized (updated)

On Jan. 20, Lauren George, 20, was seriously injured with a single gunshot wound to the head. After surgery and five days in the neuro ICU at UAB Medical Center, George is expected to make a full recovery.

In the wake of the incident, a Facebook page and Caringbridge account were set up by her family to post updates and support from the public.

As of Jan. 27 her Caringbridge page has a total of 19,562 visits and 498 hearts.  “On behalf of the family, THANK YOU for visiting this site and keeping up with Lauren’s progress. The biggest though is THANK YOU for all the prayers.” writes Jo Anne James.

“Lauren, you are a strong beautiful woman. You are surrounded by many people that care for and love you very much,” reads a post on George’s Caringbridge guestbook.

Two suspects have been apprehended for the shooting. Two 18-year-olds, Terry Christopher Searcy and Kevin Valladares Gutierriez, were arrested on Jan. 22 with charges of first-degree assault and first-degree robbery.

According to reports, the two are currently being held in Shelby County jail on $90,000 bond.

The incident has sparked unease among the student body and residents of Montevallo. While many UM students showed concern and regret over what happened to George, they also expressed a need for a greater community response to properly inform them on the exact details of the incident.
